Welcome!
Welcome to RS Games Chat Rooms. RS Games Chat Rooms utilizes the RS Games client, which allows players to chat with each other from around the world, via the centralized RS Games server.
To get started, you will need the RS Games client installed. TO get the RS Games client if you don't have it already, go to http://www.RSGames.org. connecting and logging into the server are covered in the RS Games client documentation. Alternatively, you can use the web client, from which you can play by using your web browser. The web client can be found in the "Quick Links" section on the RS Games home page.
This document assumes you have read the RS Games client documentation first, for general concepts and instructions on using the client. If you have not read this document, please read it before continuing.
If you are using the web client, options referred to as keyboard commands in this document will appear as buttons on the web page.
Creating a New room
If you choose to create a new room, you will be asked if you want to make the room private. If you choose yes, you can set a password, and only those who know the password will be able to join. You'll then be asked if you want to set an initial topic for the room, and if you want to restrict the ability to change the topic to only the game master. After that, you'll be asked if you want to enable gaming options such as dice rolling, and if you want those functions restricted to the game master. After you have made your choices, you will be placed in your room. Here, players will be able to join your room.
Closing and Reopening the Room
Unlike other games on RS Games, you don't start a chat room. Instead, the game master can press Enter at any time to close the room to new players, and again to reopen the room. This can be done as often as you want.
Joining a room
To join a room, choose the Join room option from the main menu. You will be presented with a list of rooms that are open for players, along with the people playing in each room. Choose a room from the list, and press enter. If the room is private, you will then be asked to enter the password.
Chat Room Functions
You can press T at any time to change the topic of the room. If gaming functions are enabled, you can press D to role dice. Both of these functions may be restricted to the game master.
Rolling Dice
The Chat Rooms dice rolling functionality has several preset choices of types of dice to roll. We use the Dungeons and Dragons nomenclature, where the number of dice (if more than one) is given, then the letter D, then the number of sides per die. For example, "D4" means one four-sided die, and "2D6" means two six-sided dice. If you're not satisfied with the preset choices, you can specify your own.
Kicking Players
The game master has the option to kick any other player from the room at any time, for any reason. To kick someone, hit K. You'll be asked to choose the player to kick. If they've requested a transcript, you can optionally revoke this request. You can also choose to block this player from rejoining.
In room Keyboard Commands
There are several keyboard commands that can be used to get information about your current room. You can always press Ctrl+H to get a quick reminder of these keystrokes.
- T: Change the topic of the room.
- D: Roll dice.
- K: Kick someone from the room.
- Q: Leave the room.
- F1: To get help from admins (works similar to chat.)
- F2: Send a chat message to players in the room. If you are in the main menu, this will send a chat message to all players waiting for a room.
- F3: Lower the volume of the background music.
- F4: Raise the volume of the background music.
- F5: Lower the volume of all sounds.
- F6: Raise the volume of all sounds.
- W: Who's online.
- TAB: Get room information such as who's in the current room and who is the room master.
Chatting
You can chat with other players at any point by pressing the F2 key, typing your message into the input box and pressing enter. You can also chat at the main menu to other players who are not currently in a room, also by pressing F2.
Background music
To change the volume of the background music during the room, use F3 to lower the volume and F4 to raise the volume. You can also adjust the volume of the sound effects with F5 and F6 to lower or raise the volume, respectively.
Transcripts
You can opt to receive a transcript of your room, that is, an email containing the entire text of your room. When you leave a room, you will be asked if you would like to receive a transcript. If you would, choose Yes, and the transcript will be sent to the email address you used when creating your RS Games account. You can also press F11 while you're in a room, rather than wait until you leave the room to decide.
